Government may allow telecom companies to install mobile towers at post offices
The government is planning to allow telecom companies to install mobile towers at 155,000 post offices across the country.
To this end, the telecom ministry has discussed the issue with the Department of Posts (DoP) and has asked it to prepare a roadmap for the same. Thereafter, the telecom companies and the DoP would discuss the issue to work on rent charges and other aspects.
This comes after the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Ministry of Urban Development gave in-principle approval for installation of telecom towers at government buildings, in a move to address the problem of call drops. The telecom operators have often cited lack of towers as a key reason behind call drops.
The move is also expected to help the government raise funds as the post offices are located in prime locations in the country.
